What a notary does
A lawyer acting as a notary confirms who you are, watches you sign, and certifies the document with a signature and seal. A notary can also certify that a copy matches the original.
Bring these to your appointment
- Valid government photo ID, such as a passport, driver's licence or PR card
- The original document
- Every person who needs to sign, each with their own ID
- Any instructions from the office or country that asked for the document
Do not sign in advance
The notary has to see you sign. Leave the document unsigned until you are in front of us.
Documents in another language
Some offices ask for a certified translation along with the original. Check what the receiving office needs before your appointment.
Using the document abroad
Many countries now accept an apostille, which Ontario's Official Documents Services issues for Ontario documents. We can tell you which steps apply to yours.
